What you get when you hire a Sip Happens bartender

  • A licensed, insured bartender who arrives 60 to 90 minutes before your first guest
  • A finished bar, built before anyone walks in
  • Their own professional kit, so you do not need to own a shaker
  • A signature cocktail designed for your event, with a printed menu card
  • Proper pacing, ID checks and responsible service all night
  • Full teardown and bagged trash when the bar closes

The point of hiring one is simple. You get to be a guest at your own event.

How hiring a bartender works in New Jersey

New Jersey handles alcohol at private events differently from many states, and it is worth understanding before you compare quotes.

A bartending company that does not hold a liquor license cannot sell alcohol. That means it cannot sell it by the drink, by the bottle, or folded into a package price. So the standard, legal arrangement is this: you buy the alcohol from a licensed retailer, and the bartender pours it as your agent. The industry calls this dry hire.

For you, that has three practical effects:

  • You pay shelf price for the alcohol, with no markup
  • You keep every unopened bottle
  • There can be no cash bar and no drink tickets at a private party

If a company offers to supply the alcohol in a package for a private event, ask how they are licensed to do it. The details are in New Jersey dry-hire law, explained.

What it costs

Our bartending service is $6.90 per drinking guest for a four-hour bar, with a 20-guest minimum, and $1.73 per guest for each additional hour. Setup and teardown are never billed.

Alcohol, gratuity and optional add-ons are separate. The pricing page breaks all of it down.

How many bartenders do you need?

We work to one bartender per 50 drinking guests.

  • Up to 50 guests: one bartender
  • 50 to 100 guests: two
  • 100 to 150 guests: three
  • Full craft cocktail menu: lean toward the higher number, since made-to-order drinks take longer than a beer or a pour of wine

The first hour is the heaviest of any event. Staffing is about that hour, not the average.

Seven questions to ask before you hire anyone

  1. Are you insured, and can you send a certificate? Many venues require a certificate of insurance naming them. We carry liquor liability and general liability coverage and can provide one.
  2. Who buys the alcohol? In New Jersey the correct answer for an unlicensed bartending company is that you do.
  3. Is setup and breakdown time billed? With us it is not.
  4. What does the bartender bring? Kit, bar, ice, mixers and cups vary a lot between companies. Ours are listed on the packages and add-ons page.
  5. How is the price built? Hourly rates with travel fees and minimums can be hard to predict. Per-guest pricing lets you work it out yourself.
  6. How do you handle a guest who has had enough? You want a bartender trained to pace service and decline politely.
  7. What happens if my guest count changes? Ours moves with the count, so tell us as soon as you know.

Common questions

How far ahead should I hire a bartender?

We need at least seven days. Saturdays from May through October book months ahead, and December fills early with holiday parties.

Can I hire a bartender for just two hours?

Yes. The four-hour base rate still applies, since the bartender’s evening is committed to your event either way.

Do I need a permit to have a bartender at my house?

For a private, invitation-only event on private property where nothing is sold, generally no. Events on public property such as parks and beaches go through the town, so confirm with the municipality.

Do bartenders bring the alcohol?

No. In New Jersey you buy it and we pour it. We can bring everything else.
