Most bartending companies make you fill out a form and wait for a call before you see a number. We publish ours. Sip Happens bartending service is priced per drinking guest, and the rates below are the same ones our quote builder uses.
Current bartending rates
| What | Rate |
|---|---|
| Bartending service, standard four-hour bar | $6.90 per drinking guest |
| Minimum | 20 guests ($138) |
| Each additional hour of service | $1.73 per guest, per hour |
| Setup and teardown | Included, never billed as service hours |
Rates are current as of October 2026 and can change. Your written quote is the number that counts.
What that looks like for a real event
| Drinking guests | Four-hour bar | Five-hour bar |
|---|---|---|
| 20 (minimum) | $138 | $172.60 |
| 50 | $345 | $431.50 |
| 75 | $517.50 | $647.25 |
| 100 | $690 | $863 |
| 150 | $1,035 | $1,294.50 |
| 200 | $1,380 | $1,726 |
These figures are the bartending service only. Count the guests who will actually drink, not the full invitation list. Children, non-drinkers and designated drivers do not belong in the number.
What the price includes
- Licensed, insured bartenders, staffed at roughly one per 50 drinking guests
- Arrival 60 to 90 minutes before service to build the bar
- The bartender’s own kit: shaker tins, strainer, muddler, jiggers, ice scoop, cutting board and knife, openers, pour spouts and a spill mat
- A signature cocktail designed around your event, with a printed menu card
- Responsible service and ID checks all night
- Complete teardown and bagged trash at the end
What is not in the price
The alcohol. In New Jersey a bartending company without a liquor license cannot sell you alcohol or fold it into a package. You buy it from a licensed retailer and we pour it as your agent. That is called dry hire, and it is why there is no per-drink markup in the numbers above. Read the full dry-hire explanation, then size your order with the alcohol calculator.
Gratuity. You choose one of two options. A tip jar on the bar adds nothing to your quote. If you would rather your guests were not asked to tip, we include the team’s gratuity as a single line on your quote instead.
Optional add-ons. Bar rental, coolers, ice, cups, mixers, garnishes and mocktail supplies are all available if you would rather not shop for them. Skip anything you already have covered. The full list is on the packages and add-ons page.
Extra event staff. Food servers and event assistants are quoted separately when you need them.
Why we price per guest instead of per hour
Most private bartenders quote an hourly rate, then add travel, setup, a minimum number of hours and sometimes a per-bartender fee. The total is hard to predict until the invoice arrives. A per-guest rate moves with the one thing that really determines the workload, which is how many people are at the bar. You can work out your own number before you ever contact us.
Shorter events are not discounted below the four-hour base. A bartender’s evening is committed to your event whether the bar runs two hours or four.
What changes the total
- Guest count. The largest factor by a wide margin.
- Hours of service. Anything past four hours bills at the additional-hour rate.
- Add-ons. Supplying your own ice, cups and mixers keeps the quote at the base service figure.
- Gratuity choice. Tip jar or included gratuity.
- Extra staff. Servers or assistants for larger or more formal events.
The full cost of a bar: service plus alcohol
Your total bar budget has two parts. The first is the service above. The second is what you spend at the liquor store. For a four-hour full bar at mid-shelf pricing, our calculator estimates roughly $429 in alcohol for 50 guests, $823 for 100, and $1,224 for 150. You keep every unopened bottle, and many retailers take sealed bottles back, so confirm the return policy when you buy.
Put together, a 100-guest, four-hour full bar comes to about $690 in service plus roughly $823 at the store, before add-ons and gratuity.
Common questions
Is there a deposit or contract?
Your quote is an estimate and nothing is booked until it is confirmed in writing. We go over booking terms with you when you confirm your date.
Do you charge for setup time?
No. Bartenders arrive 60 to 90 minutes early and stay to break down, and none of that time is billed.
How many bartenders will I get?
We staff to roughly one bartender per 50 drinking guests. Below that one is plenty. Above it, a second bartender is what keeps a line from forming during the first hour.
Can I book for fewer than 20 guests?
Yes. The 20-guest minimum still applies, so the service comes to $138 for a four-hour bar.
How much notice do you need?
At least seven days. Peak-season Saturdays from May through October go much earlier, often months ahead for weddings.
